- Parallel Project Training introduces a project management training course designed to introduce students to the essential elements of Project Management -
4th August, 2010: Parallel Project Training, an innovative new specialist training provider in APM project management training and APM certification, has launched a new two day introductory training course for the APM Introductory Certificate (APM IC). The APM IC is the UK professional body for project management with over 14,000 individual members and 400 corporate members. The Introductory Certificate is its preliminary course for project management professionals.
The Parallel Project Training APM Introductory Certificate course follows the APM IC syllabus and covers the essential elements of project management. It is designed to help new project managers develop a better understanding of project management, become familiar with the processes, tools and techniques of project management and enable them to make an effective contribution to the delivery of successful projects.
Graduates from the Parallel Project Training Introductory Certificate course will be able to describe a project’s context, write detailed and useful project documentation including business case and project plans, carry out work breakdowns of a project as a first step in planning, carry out risk analysis and stakeholder analysis of a project and be able to sit the APM IC exam with confidence.
The course is broken down into the following seven modules:
Project Management in Context – differentiating projects from non-projects, exploring programme and portfolio management, the influence of the business and political context on project success, the critical role of the sponsor in project success and support that can be provided by a project office.
Planning and Strategy – to clarify how success will be measured from the outset, the influence of stakeholders on requirements, how that can (or cannot) be managed.
Executing the Strategy – to drive the project forward to a successful conclusion.
Project Management Techniques – to make sure the project is fully understood and estimated fully including costs for completing the project using a number of methods and configuration management to control changes to the design.
Business and Commercial – to ensure the business case is robust and the supply chain is delivering value by including the purpose, role and ownership of the business case and working with suppliers through the procurement cycle.
Organisation and Governance – to ensure the business remains in control of the project including effective project hand over and learning lessons from the project and clearly defining roles and responsibilities for the project and business deliverables.
People and the profession – to encourage effective and strong leadership, manage effective communications, building a project team and leading projects to success
The Parallel Project Training APM IC course includes high quality APM IC course manual, which allows students to prepare and coordinate their study plans. The course manual explains the APM IC in simple steps as well as providing sample questions and MP3 podcasts. These cover important topics included in the APM IC exam – a one hour session of 60 multiple choice questions, which students must sit on the last day of the course.
Paul Naybour, Business Development Director of Parallel Project Training said “We expect this to be a very popular course as it is an excellent first step for people looking to embark on a project management career. The fact it is only two days long means students can easily devote the relevant time and study to the course without having to take vast amounts of time out of the office. We are proud to be offering both public and corporate APM IC courses in October, November and December 2010.”

Parallel Project Training Announces New Clinical Research and Development Training Package
- Parallel Project Training introduces a project management training course designed to meet the specific needs for improved value for money in clinical research project -
23rd June, 2010: Parallel Project Training, an innovative new specialist training provider in APM project management training
and APMP certification, has launched a new project management training course tailored specifically to the needs of clinical research projects to deliver improved value for money. This follows Parallel Project Training’s continued success in other industry sectors and excellent customer feedback about its flexibility, wide range of learning materials and practical approach to project management training.
The Clinical Research and Development training package provides a structured and collaborative approach to project management in the clinical trials sector. It has been designed to tackle unique challenges, such as project scoping and risk specifically faced by project managers in this sector. It aims to enable clinical trials project managers to understand and apply the principals of project management to clinical research projects and explain the benefits of this to the rest of the organisation.
The course is based on the APM Body of Knowledge, as all Parallel Project Training courses are and has been designed as a first step towards the APMP certification. It teaches project managers in the clinical trials sector how to develop a clear definition of project success factors, which is very often outside the direct influence of the project manager. It also coaches project managers to plan in the face of significant uncertainty, clearly define the project scope, effectively manage project risk and use earned value methods to provide meaningful progress reports.
The course is broken down into seven modules, which are consistently approached across all the material. These include:
-
Project Management in Context
-
Planning and Strategy
-
Executing the Strategy
-
Project Management Techniques
-
Business and Commercial
-
Organisation and Governance
-
People and the profession
The training is delivered by Roger Joby B.Sc. MAPM, a well respected and experienced project management expert and associate partner of Parallel Project Training. Roger has been involved in the pharmaceutical industry for over 30 years working for both CROs and pharmaceutical companies and now as an independent consultant. Roger’s experience includes project management, proposal generation, sub-contractor contacts and project finance.
Paul Naybour, Business Development Director of Parallel Project Training said “This is a very unique and specific course designed to help project managers in the clinical trials sector to explain the benefits of project management to their organisations and apply the principles and best practices endorsed by Parallel Project Training to their clinical research projects. Much of the success of clinical projects is outside the direct influence of the project manager and while these factors cannot be controlled, they can be influenced and managed well with a structured and collaborative approach. We are proud to be able to support this sector and due to our 100% customer pass rate so far we are sure the pharmaceutical sector will be equally successful too.” David Davies, Product Development Director from Futura Medical said “Clinical research projects often run late and over budget. Parallel Project Training is offering some new and innovative approaches which can help to improve the certainty of delivery and significantly reduce costs based value management techniques applied successful in other sectors”

The programmes have been designed to follow the same structure as the APMP syllabus and offer students the opportunity to enhance their skills and best practice knowledge in project management in order to pass the APMP exam. Review of ‘How to Pass the APMP’ John Edmonds of pearcemayfield
“It’s a course in a book” is how this study guide describes itself. It is aimed at people who wish to pass the APMP but just cannot spare the time to attend the traditional workshops.
So, how does it fare? Getting a 5-day course into a book is a tall order, and at over 270 pages it could look a bit daunting, especially considering that you also need to have the APM’s Body of Knowledge alongside it. However, when you open the book and browse through a few pages you are immediately given a very good first impression. It looks accessible and interesting.
A few years’ ago I successfully studied for a similar professional examination using a guide rather like this one. I therefore have experience of how helpful these can be if they are put together in the right way; and I think that the authors have achieved just that.
There is a good balance of text, diagrams, multiple-choice quizzes, open questions and reflections on real-life practice. It is presented cleanly and clearly and has a nice work-book feel to it – I actually felt like I wanted to grab my pen and answer some of the questions.
With mock exam papers, glossary and exam tips it has all the items that you would expect from such a guide. But it’s the main sections of the book that bring the value, and here I think that it achieves its ambitions – “a course in a book”.
John Edmonds is Head of Training at pearcemayfield and has over 25 years of programme and project management experience in the educational and financial services sectors. He is one of the authors of the latest version of PRINCE2, and is the author of a blog called ‘The Opsimath’. John is chairman of the education, training and development charity ‘Roots’.
